Illustration Friday: Suspense
Childhood of the Witch Sisters
Also my project for the annual Montserrat Illustration Theme Show
Sometimes the end of a story is revealed at the beginning, when it doesn’t really mean much to the audience. But as the story progresses and we learn to love the characters, the terrible knowledge of what awaits them builds in us a suspense far more nerve-racking than if we were simply wondering what happens next. Childhood of the Witch Sisters, based on The Wizard of Oz, depicts the wicked witches of the east and west. Both sisters die within the space of the book. I wanted to paint a scene that hinted at this future, but only slightly. For now, they are just children, exploring the somewhat ominous land of Oz.

Not sure whether the younger sister has learned how to use those shoes yet?
